Great post Jon. I’ve been in that situation myself, and had to cut a sub loose. I’ve also discovered that the definition of “OK” can mean different things to different people. The sub may say things went “ok”, and the director may say it was a wreck. Of course, I’ve had cases where the director said things were “ok” but the SUB said there were issues. It’s all about the standards of the person in question. I always try to hire people that take pride in giving a good performance and actually care about what they are doing, even if it is for just one night at a low paying job. You are 100% right that the subs performance reflects on your own reputation, so we all need to be careful.

Another eloquent blog posting. When you’ve done all you can possibly do, and your sub still does below average, it’s time to reconsider who you get to replace you. We all need subs from time to time, and your reputation is all you have in this business. Talent alone can only get you so far.

I feel the need to comment on the paragraph entitled “don’t snake the gig.” I have had this happen to me. It is completely unprofessional, and in a small circle of musicians, this ruins your chance of ever being recommended again.

It’s important to remember that as a pit musician you are never “just the player.” Everyone is listening, even when you think they aren’t. The scenario you described is one of the fastest ways to burn a bridge in this business.
